“Old Foes” in American Schools (What I learned from Sam, #4)

or…

(A Little Editorializing)

Although the earliest educational systems in America were built on Biblical principles, they were soon infiltrated by more liberal, Unitarian thought.

Simply stated: Massachusetts Puritans advocated a Biblical worldview which recognized the doctrine of the Trinity; Unitarians denied the divinity of Christ.

The seeds of this conflict were planted in 16th Century, post-Reformation thought, and the fruition of these seeds established battlegrounds in our schools which continue to this day.

The knowledge of this continuing battle is crucial to our decisions regarding the education of our children. We must be vigilant in our examination of ALL the teachings presented in our schools and determine the influences thereof.

As an aside, let me add an informational tidbit.

The existence of conflicting religious views has been engulfed in our nation from its beginnings.

Do you remember learning about the pamphlet “Common Sense” written by Thomas Paine?

Paine promoted independence from Great Britain, and his writing is credited with widespread acceptance of these ideas.

Did Paine support Christian thought?

No.

In “The Age of Reason” Paine adamantly opposed any recognition of Christ’s deity.

Samuel Blumenfeld has provided pages upon pages of information about the history of American schools. He teaches much about the philosophies found there. I recommend his work to those interested in this history.
